The Dubbo West Public School are proud of the fact that they provide facilities to cater for children with learning and reading difficulties, and they are just as proud as the support programs they run for the aboriginal students in their school. Here are just a few of the programs the school has in place. The Homework Centre The homework centre is designed to help aboriginal students with their homework after school. It also addresses issues such as numeracy and literacy skills, with specialised programs in place to aid the students growth in these areas and to identify each individual students needs. The students are first given afternoon tea and then they are given time to complete the structured homework given to them by their class teacher. There is usually a teacher around and the AEA (Aboriginal Education Assistant) to lend a hand if the students get stuck on the work. Now this usually goes from when class finishes to about five o'clock in the evening, so the students are delivered safely to their front door by the support staff at the homework centre. There is one Homework Centre on each site and they operate Tuesday and Wednesday after school from 3:30pm to 5:15pm. KIDSS Program (Kids Improving Development and Sport Skills) This program is designed to promote a healthy lifestyle to the students. It focuses on such things as improving the students hand-eye coordination and balance, and benefitting their growth and development through the use of instructed activities and sports. It also addresses issues such as nutrition and personal hygiene through special programs. This is a ten week program that runs every Wednesday in that ten week period for half an hour each session. Future Developments The school has in place at the present moment plans to develop an Aboriginal Learning Centre, where not only aboriginal students, but all students can come and learn about and try to understand aboriginal culture.
