Dubbo West Public School is a split site school of some 540 children, a high percentage of these being Aboriginal students. The school is situated on the Western side of the Macquarie River in Dubbo. The school has a dedicated, committed staff body which assists the school to work in close cooperation with its community, developing strong links through a supportive Parents and Citizens Association and a strong Aboriginal Student Support and Parent Awareness committee.
The school promotes a strong pupil welfare program. This program emphasises cooperation and harmony. It focuses on a strong and supportive anti bullying program, has in place a social skills program and places emphasis in child protection and drug education programs. The school is a member of the Priority Schools Program. Many innovative programs have been put in place through this program. One of the programs initiated has been the Circus West program that performs for the local community and beyond. The school promotes the idea that children are responsible for their own behaviour and works to assist the children to modify unsatisfactory behaviour by giving the children the necessary skills to change. Quality work has a special emphasis throughout the school. A positive reinforcement procedure is put in place which assists in promoting self esteem. The staff and pupils work continuously to make the school an attractive place. The beautification of the grounds and development of quiet areas where children can site and relax assist in improving school tone and the children's self esteem.
