Return to Table of Contents 5. Fair Discipline Code Our school is a place of learning. Our school is a place where the efforts of staff, students and community are held in high esteem. Our school is a place of harmony. Students, staff, parents and community members are required to uphold these standards by behaving in a manner that:
In order to uphold these standards, students are expected to:
wear the school uniform at all times.
Return to Table of Contents 6. Pupil Welfare Policy Student Welfare encompasses everything the school does to meet the personal, social and learning needs of students. This is achieved through programs in:
Return to Table of Contents 7. Planning Room The Planning room is used for major playground offences that cannot be solved by the teacher on duty through management strategies such as verbal warnings, rule reminders or time out. If a child refuses to obey the teacher on duty or continually breaks the playground/school rules they are referred to the planning room by the teacher on duty. Some offences include any bullying offence, violence, verbal abuse of teachers and leaving the classroom or school grounds. In the planning room the students sit and think about the rule they have broken and write out a plan to better handle the situation should it arise again. This plan is then discussed with the teacher on planning duty. Some children choose not to make a plan so they are given school rules which were broken to write out. In case of repeated visits to the planning room, parents are notified. Continued offences could result in suspension from school in accordance with the departmental policy in Suspension and Expulsion of School Students. Return to Table of Contents 8. The Bottom Line The school discipline policy is based on the Suspension and Expulsion of School Students and the Fair Discipline Code guidelines from the Department and should be used as a reference. Incidents that can result in suspension:
Return to Table of Contents 9. Attendance at School The Law requires parents to send their children each half day the school is open and teachers must maintain a class roll as proof of attendance on each school day. Parents are requested to see that their children attend regularly so that the children can gain the most can gain the most benefit from the comprehensive courses provided. Return to Table of Contents 10. If Your Child is Absent from School The child should present a note signed by the parent/caregiver to the class teacher on the first day of a child's return to school. Please contact the school if your child is going to be absent for a long period and provide a note on the child's return to school. The reason for the absence needs to be stated in detail. Return to Table of Contents 11. Changes in Students Details If there is a chance of address, telephone number or of family circumstances, parents or guardians are asked to notify the school immediately in writing so that the records can be correctly maintained. This is most important, especially when the school wishes to contact the parents with a sick child. Return to Table of Contents 12. If Your Child is Late for School If your child arrives at school late, the pupil must report to the office to receive a late note to present to the class teacher to be filed. If a child is to leave early for some reason, a note must also be supplied. A verbal message from the parent will suffice if this is more convenient. The teacher is required to maintain a record of any absences, for either full days or parts of a day, and to investigate any case where there have been unexplained absences. Unexplained absences will be investigated by the Home School Liaison Officer. Return to Table of Contents 13. If Your Child Wishes to Leave the School During the Day Children are not permitted to leave the school grounds unless the parent makes a written request, or collects the child from the school in person. Return to Table of Contents 14. If Your Child is Sick at School The school is not equipped to care for ill children. Parents are therefore requested not to send sick children to school. Children who become sick at school should tell their class teacher, or the teacher on playground, who will direct them to the administrative staff in the Primary or the Infants office. Should the child be unfit for class after a rest in sick bay (many children seem to recover after a short rest), the parents will be contacted and requested to collect the child. Should the parent not be available medical attention may be sought. Return to Table of Contents 15. Travel to and from School a. Bus Travel All children in the Infants Department and those in the Primary Department who live outside a radius of 1.6 kilometres from the school, are entitled to travel to school on special school buses free of cost. Primary children who live within the radius may use the bus, but must pay to do so. b. Free Bus Travel Children travelling free on the school buses must have a bus pass which they must show each time they get on the bus. The pass allows them to travel between their home and school. It does not allow them to travel elsewhere eg. A babysitters place. If the child does not show the bus pass, or does not have it, the child may be required to pay for the journey. c. How to get a Free Bus Pass Applications for bus passes are available at the school offices. Once they are completed they are returned to the school to be certified and then sent to the bus company who issue the ticket with the child's name on it. Special care must be taken of this ticket as it will be forfeited if abused. d. What to do if a Child Loses/Damages a Free Bus Pass Special care should be taken of free bus passes. If the pass is lost or damaged, the child may be required to obtain a new one from the bus company. The Dubbo Coach Lines at present charge an $8 fee to reissue passes. e. Bus Lines Children catching busses must join the bus lines in the school playground and wait for the teacher's instructions. The children are to walk to the bus after it has stopped. Any misbehaviour in bus lines, or while on the bus may cause the child to be removed from the bus and the free travel pass be withdrawn. School busses are not part of the school's operation. However there is a close working relationship between bus drivers and the school because both are concerned for the welfare and safety of students. f. If You Transport Your Child to and from School Car parking is a big problem before and after school, especially at the Infants campus. Please be sure to park safely when dropping off or collecting your child. Do not stop or park in the bus stop, nor the area before the crossings. Parking in these areas not only will get you fined, it may cause an accident by preventing oncoming drivers from seeing children who are crossing the road. Please do not park inside the school grounds. g. Bicycles Primary children may ride their bikes to and from school. Entrance and exit for the bike riders is only via the gate in East Street. Bicycles are not permitted to be ridden in the school grounds. Infants children do not ride bicycles to school. Return to Table of Contents 16. School Hours Parents are reminded that the playground is supervised between 9.00am and 3.30pm Monday to Friday. Children who enter the grounds outside these times do so at their own risk and no responsibility is accepted by the school for their safety. Teachers are not responsible for the children travelling to and from school, but will follow up any misbehaviour observed or reported. Teachers commence playground supervision at 9.00am. At this time children can put bags outside their rooms or order lunch at the two canteens before going to designated playgrounds. Return to Table of Contents 17. Bell Times a. Primary

Return to Table of Contents 18. Parents Visiting the School Parents are welcome at any time and should call at the office on their arrival so that they can be directed to the person they wish to see with a minimum of delay. Should parents wish to arrange an interview with a teacher to discuss their child's progress, please telephone or send a note before arriving at the school so that a suitable time can be arranged when the teacher will be free of classroom responsibilities. Return to Table of Contents 19. Visiting Show Various cultural and educational shows are invited to the school throughout the year. These shows are generally linked to curriculum areas structured within the two year rotation of units. Return to Table of Contents 20. Parent/Teacher Meetings These are held in early first term to give parents information as to grade routine expectations, school policy, school curriculum and class programs. The emphasis is on parents and teachers meeting each other and beginning a cooperative relationship for the benefit of the students. These meetings are not parent/teacher interviews. Return to Table of Contents 21. School Requisites These are generally supplied by the school. Teachers sometimes may request that parents purchase some special items for use in their class. Each child in the Primary is expected to have the following as a minimum: lead pencils, rulers, erasers, sharpener, coloured pencils, pencil case, homework book, school bag or backpack. Senior pupils also expected to bring red and blue biros. Glue sticks, textas and scissors are optional. All items should be clearly marked with the child's name. Return to Table of Contents 22. The Library The Primary and Infants are staffed by one qualified Teacher-Librarian. Primary The Library is open 9.00am Mondays and Fridays, and 1.30pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for borrowing, use of computer resources, board games and quiet activities. Borrowing: Books may be borrowed for two weeks. Borrowing Schedules are as follows:
Students may not borrow if a book is overdue. Lost books will need to be paid for. A note outlining the details and cost of lost books will be sent home. Every primary class has a library lesson each week. In These lessons, students are taught information skills for research, literature appreciation and have access to technology such as CD ROMs and the Internet. Infants The Teacher Librarian is involved with library lessons at the Infants Campus on Tuesday and Wednesday of each week. Borrowing schedules are as follows:
The children are requested to have a library bag to protect the books. Infants classes are involved in appreciating literature and basic information skills. The library is open at lunchtimes for reading and quiet activities. Return to Table of Contents 24. Medication Sick children should generally stay away from school so that they can get the necessary treatment. The school is not equipped to cater for sick children. Medication should be arranged to be given at home where possible. Where necessary arrangements can be made for their children. In Infants, medication can be left with the office staff with all details fully presented for administration. Return to Table of Contents 25. Wet Weather Arrangements This seldom happens in Dubbo. Children are not to play in the rain. Lunches will be eaten in classrooms on these days. Arrangements are as follows: Classrooms are open at 9.00am. Pairs of neighbouring class teachers share supervision during breaks. A pass card system operates for children needing to use the toilet or canteen. Bus children are to remain with supervising teacher under shelter until the bus arrives. Return to Table of Contents 26. Homework Keeping in mind the Departmental policy on homework, the following considerations are presented as the school's homework policy. Homework shall be given by each teacher to each class. At the beginning of each year the parents will be informed in writing of the teacher's homework requirements. Homework given should follow these guidelines:
For children who consistently do not do their homework parents will be informed. If prior notification by parents has been made, children will not be punished if homework is not completed. If the homework requirements change throughout the year parents are informed. Return to Table of Contents 27. Excursions Excursions are an important part of the child's education. They take place from time to time when relevant to a unit of work. Parents will be notified in writing of details about specific requirements. No child is ever permitted to attend without parental consent. Parents may be asked to participate on excursions as parent helpers. Senior pupils are involved in overnight excursions to either Sydney or Canberra/Snowy in alternate years. These usually have two fold objectives, one educational and one social where children can show they are responsible. Return to Table of Contents 28. Primary School Socials Socials are held each term. In term 1 there are separate junior and senior socials. The junior socials run from 6.00pm to 7.30pm and the senior social from 7.30pm to 9.00pm. Combined socials run from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. Tickets are sold beforehand so that the SRC can cater for food. Chips and drinks are sold at given times. The social in Term 4 is a special farewell to Year 6. Parents are asked to collect their children promptly at the conclusion of the social. No child will leave the hall during the socials and the usual school behaviour is expected. Return to Table of Contents 29. Basic School Rules These rules shall be applied fairly and consistently while valuing the opinion of the children. Pupil will:
Return to Table of Contents 30. Infectious and Communicable Diseases Parents with children starting school in Kindergarten are required to present an immunisation certificate at the time of school enrolment. Students for whom a complete immunisation certificate has not been presented, will be excluded from attending school for the period of the outbreak of the disease for which immunisation is available. Return to Table of Contents 31. Life Education Van This visits the school once a year when all students attend a session in the van and participate in follow up lessons. The school ASSPA Committee and P&C assist with the costs. Return to Table of Contents 32. Lost Property Parents are requested to clearly label all clothing and equipment that the children bring to school. Children will inevitably lose or misplace things. If they are labelled, we are able to return them to their owners. Items without names are placed in the lost property boxes at the Primary and Infants campuses. Lost items are regularly displayed. Items not claimed are returned to the boxes. Parents should check these boxes for missing items. All unclaimed items of school uniform are laundered and placed on sale through the clothing pool. Return to Table of Contents 33. School Banking All children are encouraged to bank money regularly as training to make best of their finances. The Commonwealth Savings Bank has appointed the school to process deposits through the computer. Children bring their money for depositing Thursday each week by placing their books in the class bags. The books are returned to the children on Fridays. Return to Table of Contents 34. Achievement Awards System Children's achievements are recognised through a K - 6 awards system. Achievement awards are issued by classroom teachers. All other awards presented at school assemblies. Five Achievement Awards - an Honour Award is presented 3 Honour Awards - A Certificate Two Certificates - A Banner Two Banners - A Medallion Each child is responsible for the safekeeping of their awards which are brought to school when they are upgraded to a higher level of award. Return to Table of Contents 35. Religious Instruction Scripture is held in the Primary every Friday. These lessons are non denominational. During Semester 1, the senior classes (Years 5 & 6) have a half hour lesson and during Semester 2 the junior classes (Years 3 & 4) have their lessons. Scripture is offered to all Infants classes on Friday mornings in 3 different sessions. Return to Table of Contents 36. School Sport a. Primary Sport All Primary sport takes place on a Friday. In Term 1 the Annual Swimming Carnival is held and the students have the opportunity to progress to District, Western and State levels. Sport in Term 1 is not held on February due to the extreme heat and in March sport is optional for each class. In Term 2 PSSA (Public Schools Sports Association) sport is held where students compete in sports against other schools. Sports such as Rugby League, boys and girls Soccer, Netball and boys and girls Hockey are played. Travel by bus or foot. Money for buses is collected on Friday morning. The school also has the opportunity to play in the PSSA knockout competitions organised for each sport. This enables the children the opportunity to be selected in representative teams. Sport begins at 11.30am and finishes at 1.00pm. Students who do not compete in PSSA sport are given the opportunity to participate in various sports at school. Cross country is also held this term. The school Athletics Carnival is held either in late Term 2 or early Term 3. The children can progress to the District and Western Area Carnivals. School sport usually involves athletics training on class based sport. Sport in Term 4 is held in the morning session. PSSA sports include mixed Touch Football, boys and girls Cricket, boys and Girls T-ball and mixed Tennis. 'Learn to Swim" for children in Years 2 & 3 is available in this term. b.
